Uber Goes All In on Robotaxis with Zoox, Wayve and Nissan Deals

Uber Strikes Triple Robotaxi Deal

Uber has announced a flurry of autonomous vehicle partnerships that signal its most aggressive push yet into the driverless ride-hailing market. The ride-hailing giant struck a multiyear deal with Amazon-owned Zoox and separately partnered with Wayve Technologies and Nissan to bring robotaxis to three major cities across two continents.

Zoox Comes to the Uber App

Under the Zoox agreement, riders will be able to hail Zoox's purpose-built, four-seat autonomous pods through the Uber app starting this summer in Las Vegas, with a planned expansion to Los Angeles by mid twenty twenty seven. This marks Zoox's first ever partnership with a third-party ride-hailing platform. Zoox has been operating a free robotaxi service on the Las Vegas Strip since September twenty twenty five and will continue offering rides through its own app alongside the Uber integration.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi called Zoox an ideal partner, citing the company's commitment to safety and advanced autonomous driving technology. Zoox CEO Aicha Evans described the collaboration as an opportunity to advance autonomous mobility in daily life.

Tokyo Pilot Takes Shape

In a separate announcement, Uber, Wayve and Nissan signed a memorandum of understanding to develop and pilot a robotaxi service in Tokyo by late twenty twenty six. The programme will use Nissan LEAF electric vehicles equipped with Wayve's AI Driver technology, with rides available through the Uber app. Vehicles will initially operate with a trained safety operator on board.

Wayve, which recently raised one point two billion dollars in Series D funding at a valuation of eight point six billion dollars, has been testing its technology across Japan since early twenty twenty five. Its AI Driver system is designed to learn from real-world data and operate without high-definition maps.

The Bigger Picture

These deals bring Uber's autonomous vehicle partnerships to more than twenty five worldwide. The company already facilitates driverless rides with Waymo in Austin and Atlanta, and has planned launches with Lucid, Nuro and Volkswagen. Uber aims to offer autonomous rides in at least fifteen cities by the end of twenty twenty six, including London, Zurich, Madrid, Munich and Hong Kong.

However, the rapid expansion raises pressing questions about the future of millions of gig drivers. Khosrowshahi has acknowledged that while human drivers will be needed for the next five to seven years, displacement could become a real issue within ten to fifteen years. Early data from cities with active robotaxi fleets already shows declining hourly pay and fewer trips for human drivers.
