Salesforce has announced that Heroku, its pioneering cloud platform-as-a-service, is transitioning to a sustaining engineering model with no new features or enterprise sales. The company is redirecting engineering resources toward AI development, marking the effective end of active development for a platform it acquired for two hundred and twelve million dollars in twenty ten.

Heroku Enters Sunset Phase as Salesforce Bets on AI

Salesforce has announced that Heroku, once a trailblazer in cloud application development, is transitioning to what the company calls a "sustaining engineering model." The move effectively ends new feature development for the platform and halts enterprise sales to new customers immediately.

The announcement, made on Thursday, confirms that Heroku Enterprise Account contracts will no longer be offered to new buyers. Existing enterprise customers will have their subscriptions and support contracts honoured, with renewal options intact. Credit card customers using the Heroku dashboard will see no changes to pricing, billing, or day-to-day service.

A Pioneer Put Out to Pasture

Heroku launched in two thousand and seven and was acquired by Salesforce in twenty ten for approximately two hundred and twelve million dollars. The platform helped define the modern Platform-as-a-Service model, making application deployment as simple as a git push. At its peak, Heroku supported over one million developers and was used by companies including Twitter, Groupon, and Hulu.

The timing is particularly striking. As recently as January twenty twenty-six, Heroku employees were promoting an ambitious innovation roadmap following the launch of the Fir platform built on Kubernetes, managed AI inference features, and official dot NET support. The platform was also named a Leader in the twenty twenty-four Gartner Magic Quadrant for Cloud Application Platforms.

Community Reaction and Migration

The developer community has responded with a mix of disappointment and resignation. StoreConnect CEO Mikel Lindsaar called the news devastating for the Heroku team, noting that despite apparent momentum, sales ultimately fell short of expectations. Tech commentator Simon Willison interpreted the announcement bluntly, suggesting that sustaining engineering model likely means they will keep the lights on and nothing more.

Competitors including Railway, Render, and Fly dot io are already courting displaced Heroku users, offering migration tools and competitive pricing as developers evaluate their options.

The AI Imperative

Salesforce framed the decision as a strategic reallocation of resources toward areas of greatest long-term customer value, specifically helping organisations build and deploy enterprise-grade AI. The move aligns with the company's broader push into AI-powered products like Agentforce, which has reportedly closed over eighteen thousand five hundred deals.
