Nvidia is reportedly finalising a twenty billion dollar investment in OpenAI's latest funding round, marking the chipmaker's single largest commitment to the ChatGPT developer. The deal forms part of OpenAI's broader effort to raise up to one hundred billion dollars at a valuation of around eight hundred and thirty billion dollars.

Nvidia's Biggest Bet on AI

Nvidia is on the verge of completing a twenty billion dollar investment in OpenAI, according to Bloomberg, in what would be the chipmaker's single largest financial commitment to the artificial intelligence startup behind ChatGPT.

The deal, while nearing completion, is not yet finalised and terms could still shift. It forms part of a broader strategic partnership announced in September twenty twenty-five, when the two companies unveiled a letter of intent worth up to one hundred billion dollars to deploy ten gigawatts of AI data centre infrastructure powered by Nvidia chips.

Drama and Reassurance

The investment comes after a period of reported tension between the two companies. The Wall Street Journal reported that discussions had been "on ice," with some Nvidia insiders expressing doubts about the arrangement. However, Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang moved quickly to dismiss concerns, telling CNBC on the second of February that "there's no drama involved" and that the partnership remains firmly on track.

"I believe in OpenAI. The work that they do is incredible. They're one of the most consequential companies of our time," Huang said during a visit to Taipei.

The Bigger Picture

OpenAI is seeking to raise as much as one hundred billion dollars in fresh funding, which could value the company at between seven hundred and fifty billion and eight hundred and thirty billion dollars. Microsoft, Amazon, and SoftBank are all in discussions to participate, with Amazon reportedly considering an investment of up to fifty billion dollars.

The massive fundraising effort comes as OpenAI faces substantial operating costs, with projected losses of around fourteen billion dollars in twenty twenty-six. The company has grown to over seven hundred million weekly active users but faces increasing competition, with ChatGPT's web traffic share falling from nearly eighty-seven percent to around sixty-five percent over the past year.

The first gigawatt of Nvidia systems under the partnership is expected to be deployed in the second half of twenty twenty-six using Nvidia's new Vera Rubin platform, with the infrastructure designed to support the training and deployment of next-generation AI models.
