Google Whistleblower Claims Tech Giant Helped Israeli Military Analyse Drone Footage

The Whistleblower Complaint

A former Google employee has filed a confidential complaint with the US Securities and Exchange Commission alleging that the tech giant breached its own artificial intelligence ethics principles by providing technical assistance to an Israeli military contractor.

According to documents reviewed by The Washington Post, Google's cloud computing division helped CloudEx, an Israeli tech company working as a contractor for the Israel Defence Forces, troubleshoot issues with Google's Gemini AI while analysing aerial drone footage.

Technical Support for Military Surveillance

The complaint alleges that a customer support request sent from an IDF email address was received by Google's cloud division. The customer name matched an employee of CloudEx, who was seeking help after encountering a bug that caused the software to occasionally fail to identify drones, soldiers, and other objects in aerial imagery.

Google's support staff reportedly responded with suggestions and conducted internal tests to resolve the issue. A second Google employee, who allegedly worked on the IDF's Google Cloud account, was also copied on the support request.

Google's Response

Google disputes the allegations, with a spokesperson telling The Washington Post that the interaction did not violate ethics guidelines because the account had minimal AI product spending. The company stated that support staff merely answered a general use question with standard help desk information.

Pattern of Policy Concerns

The whistleblower accuses Google of applying a double standard when it comes to Israel and Gaza, claiming that while internal AI ethics review processes are typically rigorous, the opposite was true in this case.

This complaint emerges against the backdrop of Project Nimbus, a one point two billion dollar cloud computing contract between Google, Amazon, and the Israeli government. Leaked documents have revealed that Google knew before signing the deal that it could not control how Israel would use its technology.

AI Principles Overhaul

In February twenty twenty five, Google removed pledges from its AI principles that previously prohibited developing AI for weapons or surveillance violating internationally accepted norms. The company stated it needed to help democratically elected governments evolve and keep up with global AI usage.
