Elon Musk confirmed that SpaceX has successfully blocked Russia's unauthorized use of Starlink satellite terminals on attack drones targeting Ukraine. Ukrainian Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov praised the rapid response, stating that countermeasures are already delivering real results and no Ukrainians have been killed by Starlink-equipped Russian drones since the blocks were implemented.
SpaceX Takes Swift Action Against Russian Drone Tactics
Elon Musk announced on Sunday that emergency measures implemented by SpaceX to prevent Russia's unauthorized use of Starlink satellite internet have proven effective. The announcement came just days after Ukraine's Defence Ministry alerted SpaceX to a concerning development: Russian attack drones equipped with Starlink terminals were penetrating deep into Ukrainian territory, evading electronic warfare countermeasures that would normally disable them. How Russia Exploited the Technology
Ukrainian officials discovered Starlink terminals on wreckage from downed Russian drones, including Shahed, Molniya-2, and BM-35 variants. The satellite connectivity allowed Russian operators to bypass Ukraine's electronic defences designed to jam GPS and radio signals. Evidence pointed to hundreds of attacks by Starlink-equipped drones, with some capable of travelling up to 500 kilometres. A Starlink-enabled Shahed drone was reportedly used in an attack on a passenger train in Kharkiv Oblast on January 27.The Technical Challenge
The situation presents a delicate balancing act for SpaceX. Ukraine relies on more than 50,000 Starlink terminals for battlefield communications and drone operations, making them essential to the country's defence. Any countermeasures must block Russian exploitation while preserving Ukrainian access. Reports suggest SpaceX implemented speed restrictions that disable terminals when moving faster than approximately 90 kilometres per hour, affecting fixed-wing attack drones while allowing slower quadcopter-style drones to continue operating.A Permanent Solution in Development
Ukraine has adopted a resolution to introduce a whitelist system for Starlink terminals. Soon, only verified and registered terminals will operate in Ukraine, with all others disabled. Ukrainian Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov thanked Musk, calling him a true champion of freedom and a true friend of the Ukrainian people, noting that thanks to the first steps taken, no Ukrainians have been killed by Russian drones using Starlink since the countermeasures began.Published February 2, 2026 at 2:10pm
