Apple has lost at least four more AI researchers and a senior Siri executive in recent weeks, with departures to Meta and Google DeepMind highlighting the company's ongoing struggle to retain top AI talent amid a pivotal transition to Google's Gemini-powered Siri.

Apple's Talent Exodus Continues

Apple has suffered another wave of high-profile departures from its artificial intelligence division, with at least four researchers and a senior Siri executive leaving for rival companies Meta and Google DeepMind.

The latest exits include Yinfei Yang, who departed to launch a startup; Haoxuan You and Bailin Wang, who joined Meta; and Zirui Wang, who moved to Google DeepMind. You has joined Meta's Superintelligence research arm, while Bailin Wang is working on Meta's recommendations systems.

Senior Siri Executive Heads to Google

Perhaps most notable is the departure of Stuart Bowers, one of Apple's most senior executives working on Siri. Bowers has left for Google DeepMindÔÇöthe very company now providing the AI models that will power Apple's upgraded Siri. During his tenure at Apple, Bowers focused on Siri's response capabilities and reported directly to Siri chief Mike Rockwell. He previously worked on Apple's now-abandoned self-driving car project before transitioning to the voice assistant team.

A Pattern of Departures

The recent exits are part of a larger talent exodus that has plagued Apple's AI division throughout 2025 and into 2026. The company lost more than a dozen senior AI researchers and engineers last year alone, with Meta emerging as the primary beneficiary. The most significant departure saw Ruoming Pang, who led Apple's hundred-person foundation models team, leave for Meta's superintelligence team with a compensation package reportedly exceeding two hundred million dollars.

Why Apple Is Losing the Talent War

Analysts attribute Apple's struggles to several factors: compensation packages that cannot match rivals willing to offer tens of millions annually, strategic uncertainty over whether to build or buy AI capabilities, and frustration over delayed product launches. The company's deliberations about outsourcing technology to Google have reportedly caused significant discontent among staff.

Apple's Strategic Pivot

The departures come as Apple undergoes a major transition in its AI strategy. In December, AI chief John Giannandrea stepped down after failing to deliver a promised Siri upgrade, with Amar Subramanya taking over as vice president of AI. Earlier this month, Apple announced a multi-year deal with Google to use Gemini models for its revamped Siri, reportedly paying approximately one billion dollars annually for the technology.

The first Gemini-powered Siri features could debut as early as February, with a larger overhaul planned for later this year.
