Apple has acquired Israeli AI startup Q.ai for a reported $2 billion, marking its second-largest acquisition ever. The company's technology can interpret facial micromovements to understand whispered and even silent speech, potentially revolutionising how users interact with Siri and wearables like AirPods and Vision Pro.

Apple's Second-Biggest Acquisition Ever

Apple has confirmed the acquisition of Q.ai, an Israeli artificial intelligence startup specialising in audio and communication technology. While Apple declined to disclose the purchase price, the Financial Times reports the deal is valued at approximately $2 billion, making it Apple's second-largest acquisition after the $3 billion Beats purchase in 2014.

What Q.ai Does

Q.ai has developed machine learning applications designed to help devices understand whispered speech and enhance audio quality in challenging environments. However, the company's most intriguing capability lies in its patented "silent speech" technology, which can decode words from facial skin micromovements without any audible vocalisation.

Patent filings describe systems using coherent light and sensors to detect minute facial movements associated with speech before sound is even produced. This could enable users to communicate with devices through mouthed words alone.

A Familiar Face Returns to Apple

The acquisition marks the second time Apple has purchased a company founded by Aviad Maizels. In 2013, Apple acquired his startup PrimeSense for approximately $350 million. That technology eventually became the foundation for Face ID, which debuted on the iPhone X in 2017.

Maizels founded Q.ai in 2022 after leaving Apple, alongside co-founders Dr Yonatan Wexler, formerly of OrCam, and AI researcher Dr Avi Barliya. All three founders and Q.ai's one hundred employees will join Apple.

Potential Applications

The technology could significantly enhance Apple's wearables ecosystem. AirPods users might issue commands without speaking aloud, while Vision Pro could gain more sophisticated interaction capabilities. Most notably, this could represent a major step forward for Siri, enabling truly silent communication with Apple's AI assistant.

Strategic Implications

The acquisition comes as Apple reportedly plans to transform Siri into a more capable AI chatbot. With competitors like OpenAI and Google dominating the generative AI space, Apple appears to be betting on novel interaction methods rather than competing purely on language model capabilities. Q.ai's investors included Kleiner Perkins, Alphabet's Gradient Ventures, Aleph, Matter, Exor, and Corner Ventures.
