SoftBank Group is in talks to invest up to thirty billion dollars more in OpenAI, which would bring its total commitment to approximately seventy billion dollars. The investment comes as OpenAI pursues a massive hundred billion dollar funding round that could value the company at eight hundred and thirty billion dollars.

SoftBank Eyes Another Massive OpenAI Investment

Japanese conglomerate SoftBank Group is in discussions to invest up to an additional thirty billion dollars in OpenAI, according to The Wall Street Journal. This potential investment comes just weeks after SoftBank completed a forty-one billion dollar investment in the ChatGPT maker, giving it an eleven percent ownership stake.

Building on Record Investment

SoftBank finalised its previous commitment on December twenty-sixth twenty twenty-five, when it transferred the final tranche of twenty-two point five billion dollars through its Vision Fund two. To fund these investments, the company sold its entire stake in Nvidia for five point eight billion dollars.

The new investment would form part of a funding round that could raise up to one hundred billion dollars for OpenAI, potentially valuing the artificial intelligence company at approximately eight hundred and thirty billion dollars, making it one of the largest private fundraises in history.

Funding the AI Arms Race

OpenAI's aggressive fundraising reflects the enormous capital requirements of frontier artificial intelligence development. The company is burning through cash despite generating annualised revenue of approximately twenty billion dollars by the end of twenty twenty-five. Investment banks have projected that OpenAI faces a funding gap of roughly two hundred and seven billion dollars through twenty thirty to cover its cloud and data centre commitments.

The Stargate Project

The capital would help fund the Stargate project, a five hundred billion dollar multi-year data centre initiative. OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank recently announced five new American data centre sites, bringing Stargate to nearly seven gigawatts of planned capacity and over four hundred billion dollars in investment over the next three years.

Looking Ahead

Microsoft remains OpenAI's largest strategic partner, holding roughly twenty-seven percent of the company. OpenAI is reportedly preparing for an initial public offering that could come as early as late twenty twenty-six or twenty twenty-seven and potentially value the company at one trillion dollars.
