Meta is preparing to test premium subscription tiers across Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, offering exclusive features, AI capabilities powered by its recent two billion dollar Manus acquisition, and enhanced user controls. The move represents Meta's boldest attempt yet to diversify beyond advertising revenue.

Meta's Subscription Gambit

Meta Platforms is set to test premium subscription tiers across its flagship appsÔÇöInstagram, Facebook, and WhatsAppÔÇöin the coming months. The tech giant confirmed the plans on Monday, describing offerings that will unlock exclusive features, expanded AI capabilities, and enhanced user controls while keeping core app experiences free.

Beyond the Ad Model

The move signals a strategic pivot for a company that still generates roughly ninety-eight percent of its revenue from digital advertising. Each app will feature its own distinct set of premium perks rather than a one-size-fits-all bundle, with Meta indicating it will experiment with various subscription models and price points before any broader rollout.

What Premium Users Can Expect

On Instagram, leaked features reveal several compelling perks: unlimited audience lists for targeted Story sharing, the ability to see which followers do not follow back, and the option to view Stories anonymously without the poster knowing. These tools address longstanding user requests that previously required third-party workarounds.

AI capabilities will anchor much of the premium offering. Meta plans to integrate Manus, the Singapore-based AI agent startup it acquired for a reported two billion dollars in late December, directly into its subscription tiers. The company has already been spotted testing a Manus shortcut inside Instagram.

Standing Out from Meta Verified

The premium push distinguishes itself from Meta Verified, which targets creators and businesses with verified badges, impersonation protections, and direct support. The new tiers instead aim at everyday users seeking enhanced functionality.

Following a Proven Path

Meta is following a path blazed by Snap Inc., whose Snapchat Plus subscription has topped seventeen million subscribers at three dollars and ninety-nine cents per month. Telegram and YouTube have similarly demonstrated consumer appetite for paid social features.

Challenges Ahead

Subscription fatigue looms as a potential obstacle. With numerous services competing for monthly spending, Meta will need to deliver clear value to attract signups. Pilot programmes are expected to start with small user groups in North America and parts of Europe in the coming weeks.
