Apple is preparing to replace its decade-old Siri voice assistant with a full-featured artificial intelligence chatbot later this year, marking the company's most significant push into the generative AI landscape. The new system, code-named Campos internally, will transform how users interact with their Apple devices by offering conversational AI capabilities comparable to ChatGPT and Claude.

The Campos Project

The chatbot will be deeply embedded into iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, replacing the current Siri interface entirely while maintaining the same activation methods users are familiar with. Users will still be able to summon the assistant by saying the Siri wake word or holding down the side button on their devices, but the underlying technology represents a fundamental shift in capabilities.

Unlike the current version of Siri, which processes individual commands independently, the new chatbot will support continuous, multi-turn conversations with context retention across exchanges. This means users can refine requests, ask follow-up questions, and maintain an ongoing dialogue session, similar to interactions with standalone AI chatbots.

Google Partnership

The development relies on a significant partnership between Apple and Google announced earlier in January 2026. Under a multi-year agreement, Apple will utilize Google's Gemini AI models and cloud infrastructure to power what Apple calls its Foundation Models. According to reports, Apple is paying Google approximately one billion dollars annually for access to these capabilities.

The collaboration represents a notable strategic shift for Apple, which typically prefers to develop core technologies in-house. However, the partnership allows Apple to leverage Google's substantial investments in large language model development and cloud computing infrastructure, potentially accelerating its entry into the competitive AI assistant market by several years.

The chatbot will run on a custom model based on Google Gemini, specifically a higher-end version comparable to Gemini 3, which Apple refers to internally as Apple Foundation Models version 11. This model will execute on Google's Tensor Processing Units and cloud infrastructure, enabling more sophisticated processing than the on-device models Apple currently deploys.

Two-Phase Rollout

Apple has planned a staged deployment beginning this spring. The first phase, arriving with iOS 26.4 around April or May 2026, will deliver an improved version of Siri powered by Gemini technology but maintaining the existing user interface. This intermediate release serves as a bridge to the more comprehensive transformation.

The second phase, scheduled for September 2026, will introduce the full Campos chatbot experience with iOS 27 and macOS 27. Apple plans to announce these changes at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2026, positioning the Siri overhaul as a flagship feature for its 2026 software platforms.

Enhanced Capabilities

The new system will offer substantially expanded functionality compared to the current Siri. Expected capabilities include web searching, content generation, document summarization, file analysis, and coding assistance. These features bring Apple's built-in assistant in line with standalone AI chatbots that have gained widespread adoption over the past few years.

The chatbot will support both voice and text input, with continuity maintained between different interaction modes. This flexibility allows users to switch between speaking and typing within the same conversation thread, adapting to different contexts and environments.

Internal Testing

Apple employees have been testing AI chatbot tools internally since November 2025, including a system called Enchante that functions similarly to ChatGPT. Staff members use these tools for document proofreading and brainstorming, with feedback from internal testing expected to influence the customer-facing product.

This testing phase comes after multiple delays to the Siri upgrade project since it was first previewed at WWDC 2024. Engineering challenges reportedly caused setbacks throughout 2025, though CEO Tim Cook stated in October 2025 that development remained on schedule for a 2026 release.

Privacy Considerations

The reliance on Google's cloud infrastructure raises questions about data privacy, a traditional cornerstone of Apple's brand positioning. Processing user conversations through Google's servers represents a departure from Apple's typical approach of performing as much computation as possible on-device.

Apple will need to address how user data is handled, what information is shared with Google, and what protections are in place to maintain user privacy. The company has not yet detailed its privacy framework for the new system, though such information is expected when the full product is announced at WWDC in June.

Competitive Landscape

The Siri overhaul positions Apple to compete more directly with Microsoft-backed OpenAI, Google's existing Gemini offerings, and other AI assistants that have captured significant user attention. Current Siri has faced criticism for lagging behind competitors in natural language understanding and task completion capabilities.

OpenAI's ChatGPT will remain integrated into Siri for complex queries on an opt-in basis, providing users with access to multiple AI backends depending on their needs and preferences. This multi-model approach gives Apple flexibility while it develops its primary Gemini-powered system.

The September 2026 release will mark a critical moment for Apple as it attempts to reassert its position in the AI assistant market after years of incremental updates to Siri. The success of Campos may influence how users perceive Apple's broader AI strategy and its ability to compete in an increasingly AI-driven technology landscape.
