Coinbase has launched 'Coinbase for Agents', a platform that lets AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude connect to user accounts to execute crypto trades and make autonomous payments. Announced on 11 June, it uses programmable guardrails and the x402 payment protocol for machine-to-machine transactions settled in stablecoins.
Coinbase Hands the Keys to AI Agents
Coinbase has unveiled 'Coinbase for Agents', a platform that allows AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude to connect directly to user accounts, execute cryptocurrency trades, and make autonomous payments for premium data services. Announced on 11 June 2026, it marks one of the most concrete steps yet toward what CEO Brian Armstrong calls an 'agentic economy', a future where AI agents transact on our behalf around the clock. How It Works
The tool lets AI agents operate within a user's existing Coinbase account or inside a sandboxed environment with programmable guardrails. Users set the rules: maximum trade sizes, allowed assets, and spending limits, treating the agent more like a controlled gift card than a blank cheque. Agents can run portfolio rebalancing toward a target allocation such as 60% BTC, 20% ETH and 20% SOL, execute dollar-cost averaging, monitor idle cash 24/7, and buy dips using limit orders. The platform initially supports crypto spot markets and derivatives, with equities, prediction markets and commodities planned next. The x402 Payment Layer
Payments between agents and service providers run through x402, Coinbase's open-source machine-to-machine payment protocol that settles instantly in stablecoins, primarily USDC. Named after the rarely used HTTP 402 'Payment Required' status code, x402 launched in May 2025 and has since processed more than 100 million transactions, with roughly 157,000 agents acting as buyers in the past 30 days. The protocol lets agents pay for API access, premium research data and other digital services without a human approving each transaction.Building an Agentic Ecosystem
This is the latest piece of a larger strategy. In February, Coinbase introduced Agentic Wallets that let AI systems hold and manage crypto autonomously. In April, it launched Agentic.Market, a marketplace where agents discover and purchase services from one another with no API keys required. The x402 protocol now has institutional backing from Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Visa, Mastercard and Stripe, which formed the x402 Foundation to govern the standard. Notably, Armstrong has stressed that AI agents cannot open their own bank accounts, positioning crypto rails as the natural payment layer for machines.Market Reaction
Coinbase shares rose following the announcement. The company, which reported a Q1 2026 earnings miss of -$0.17 per share against estimates of $0.11, carries a market capitalisation of roughly $41 billion, with analysts holding a consensus Buy rating and a price target of $296.08.Published June 12, 2026 at 12:39pm
